Black Bear Facts
- Ontario has black bear numbers unsurpassed
anywhere in North America.
- We are located in the heart of Northwestern
Ontario's Boreal Forest, which is home to the highest concentration of Black
Bear anywhere. The Boreal Forests are very dense and thick, so our stands for
archery are anywhere up to 20 yds.
- The rifle sights are under 50 yds. so if you
have a scope on your rifle, make sure it is low power. Make sure your equipment
is sighted in and ready to go, first shots have to count, very rarely will you
get a second shot.
- Most wild male black bears weigh between 125
and 500 pounds, while females weigh between 90 and 300 pounds.
- Mating season in our area in in June, with the
cubs being born in January or early February.
- The black bear is a magnificent animal with
one of the most sensitive noses' in the wild. Black bears have a large brain
compared to their size and are one of the most intelligent mammals.
- Their long term memory is excellent. Once they
find the bait, they don't forget it.
- Black bears in this area hibernate generally
from late October to late April, 7 months. They can also live anywhere from
20-30 years.
- The bear future depends on how well we manage
our hunt, by not over harvesting, and on how well we understand and tolerate
them.

Hunter Orange

The objective of the hunter orange
regulation is to maximize hunter safety without negatively impacting hunting
success.
Under this regulation, all licensed
hunters, including archery hunters hunting during the gun season for deer
and moose, are required to wear hunter orange. As well, all black bear hunters
hunting during the black bear season are required to wear hunter orange except
when in a tree stand. (This exception is in place because, unlike deer and
moose, black bears have colour vision.) Waterfowl hunters, wild turkey hunters
and archery hunters in archery-only areas are exempt from the hunter orange
requirement.
A hunter orange garment and head cover
must be worn. The hunter orange garment must cover a minimum of 400 square
inches (2,580 square cm) above the waist and be visible from all sides. Open
mesh or camouflage hunter orange must not be part of the 400 square inches. A
hunting coat or vest generally meets this requirement. The hunter orange head
cover may have: open mesh; a peak or brim colour other than hunter orange; a
crest or logo which does not completely cover the hunter orange on the side
where it is affixed. The head cover may not contain camouflage material.
Hunter orange colour standards are
generally consistent across North America. Manufacturers can provide
information regarding clothing compliance with this standard. Hunter orange
product is available at the
